The people of Eastern Los Angeles have been coming to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) for more than 100 years. Their four centers of excellence are in cancer treatment, heart conditions, women’s health and trauma care. From cutting edge diagnostics to robotic surgery, the PVHMC staff are on the forefront of medical science. In response to the coronavirus, they sought out the latest technology for help with the health and wellbeing of their doctors, patients and staff.

Challenge

Infections have always been a concern at medical facilities, but the 2020 pandemic brought many new and unique challenges. With 400 patient beds, 700 physicians, 3,500 trained associates and thousands of volunteers, PVHMC had to quickly implement a new fever check and mask-wearing policies handed down by California’s state and local officials.

HIPAA laws on handling patient data also constrained what kind of devices they could choose.

Richard Yochum, CEO of PVHMC, wrote in a statement to the press, “Protecting public health and ensuring patient, Associate and Physician safety are our top priorities. We are following the Centers for Disease Control and Los Angeles County Public Health Department guidelines, which are evolving rapidly.”

Solution

After reviewing their options, leaders at PVHMC turned to the OneScreen GoSafe to handle the required temperature scanning and mask identification protocols.

GoSafe stood out from the crowd because it had already developed a reputation for delivering accuracy, speed and data security at thousands of locations around the world. Technicians at PVHMC were most impressed with capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor at the heart of GoSafe, unique among all scanners on the market. The IT specialists recognized that with Qualcomm on board, GoSafe has the versatility to function as an entryway access control device, long after the current pandemic was no more than memory.

Result

At first, PVHMC bought 5 GoSafe units for testing and assurance. Delighted by the results, the PVHMC team came back for 15 more and then 30. The more the team used GoSafe, the more they explored its capabilities in entryway access management. GoSafe allows the team to manage all of devices on the network from a web-based control that can be launched on any device and send out pre-screening questionnaires to hospital visitors on issues such as their recent travel to other states or flu-like symptoms.

Yochum summed up the feelings of everyone on the PVHMC staff, writing, “I am heartened by the messages of support we've received from the community on social media - and the donations of protective and disinfectant supplies. We are grateful for your encouragement and generosity. We will get through this challenging time together.”
